Man named as illegal alien to be deported
By: SABRINA SHANKMAN Staff Writer

REHOBOTH - An East Providence man is being detained, pending deportation back to his native Brazil, after police in Rehoboth said they discovered Wednesday morning that he was in the county illegally.
Renilton Barbosa, 29, was arrested early Wednesday morning after the car he was driving swerved over the center line of Winthrop Street, police said

Barbosa was charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle after he was able to show police only his Brazilian identification card and an international driver's license.

Barbosa, who police said speaks very little English, said he was driving from his job at Halsmith Sysco in Taunton back to East Providence and was falling asleep, which was why the car swerved, according to a police report.

A human resources representative from Sysco said Barbosa is not an employee there, but court documents state otherwise.

When Rehoboth police did a background check on Barbosa, an active federal warrant from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is part of the Homeland Security Department, showed that Barbosa was in the country illegally, according to court documents.

Barbosa was ordered to be detained for no more than 48 hours and then he will be deported to Brazil.

The Rehoboth police charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle was dismissed by Taunton District Judge Margaret Hinkle "in the interest of justice."
