PHOENIX (AP) — A Mexican resident has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison for assaulting a Border Patrol agent near the central Arizona town of Eloy.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that 26-year-old Carlos Parra-Gonzalez, of Chihuahua, received a 63-month sentence in U.S. District Court in Phoenix.

They say Parra-Gonzalez previously pleaded guilty to assault on a federal officer.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officers stopped a vehicle on Interstate 10 near Eloy on Oct. 1, 2009.

They say Parra-Gonzalez was one of the vehicle's passengers and Border Patrol officials were called because of his immigration status. They say Parra-Gonzalez resisted arrested and punched an agent in the face before he was subdued.
