Man shot at San Diego County border crossing UPDATED
Man shot at San Diego County border crossing
updated 1 minute ago
SAN DIEGO - Federal officers shot and injured a man at the nation's busiest border crossing Saturday after he entered San Diego County from Mexico, authorities said.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Jackie Dizdul said the man, whom police have not identified, was shot just before 9 a.m. at a checkpoint at the San Ysidro Point of Entry, which connects San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. About 40,000 vehicles cross into the U.S. at the port each day, and it has 24 northbound lanes.
Dizdul said three of the lanes have been closed while San Diego police investigate. It was not clear Saturday afternoon what prompted the shooting or how seriously the man was injured.
In September, several people were injured after the drivers of three vans filled with dozens of suspected illegal immigrants reportedly tried to storm through the border crossing, and federal agents opened fire.
U.S. authorities shut down the border crossing for several hours. Police said the federal agents were on foot and felt trapped as two of the vans barreled toward them.

They need to learn to shoot better. Maybe the Fort Lauderdale police or Broward County Sherrif deputies could train them.

The man was transported by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego, according to a San Diego Fire Department dispatcher. Law enforcement officials in San Diego County wouldn’t say how seriously the man was injured.
The shooting occurred around 9 a.m., and involved two Customs and Border Protection officers, Bond said. The incident was being investigated by the San Diego Police Department, which has jurisdiction over the area.

A vehicle drive at a law enforcement is considered a weapon and only a fool would not shoot at it.

Customs inspectors shoot man as he attempts to ram San Ysidro Port of Entry
April 17, 2010 | 1:09 pm
Federal customs inspectors shot and wounded a man who tried to crash through the border crossing Saturday morning at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to San Diego police.
The suspect, a man in his 50s, ignored orders from an inspector directing him to a secondary inspection area, triggering a port runner alert. When barricades trapped the suspect’s Chevrolet Tahoe, the man accelerated and rammed an occupied vehicle and a concrete barrier.
Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents fired their weapons. The man sustained a chest wound that is not considered life-threatening, said Lt. Kevin Rooney of the San Diego Police Department.
Police have yet to determine a motive, and plan to inspect the vehicle to determine if the man was attempting to smuggle drugs or immigrants, Rooney said. Authorities closed three of the 24 northbound lanes during the investigation, backing up traffic for several hours.

The man was not identified. He was described as in his 50s.
It was unclear if he'll be prosecuted federally or locally, Rooney said.
The truck he was driving was reported stolen in Colorado, Rooney said.

Now that makes a whole bunch of sense! Steal truck in Colorado, run to Mexico and then try to crash a port of entry -- perhaps to return the truck after you have unloaded the cargo?
