Rafael Hernandez-Vasquez WCSO
Summary: A man accused of crashing a stolen van has been convicted and sentenced in Washington County Circuit Court.
The case: At about 5:15 p.m. Sept. 28, deputies responded to a report of a vehicle crashed near Southwest Unger Road and Line Drive, southeast of Cornelius. Deputies found a 1996 Plymouth Voyager in a ditch, and the driver alone in the van with apparent non-life threatening injuries. Authorities said the van was stolen in Woodburn. Rafael Hernandez-Vasquez, 33, was taken to a hospital for his injuries. He was then cited for DUII and released. Hernandez-Vasquez subsequently failed to appear on Oct. 24 for court and was arrested.
Update: On Nov. 26, Hernandez-Vasquez pleaded guilty to one count of DUII. Two other charges were dismissed.
Sentence: Hernandez-Vasquez was sentenced to two years of enhanced bench probation, which is to include alcohol abuse treatment. He was fined $1,940, plus other fees and fines. Due to an immigration hold, Hernandez-Vasquez has been turned over to federal officials for processing and possible deportation.
