Border march for immigrant rights is set

Organizers of a May 1 boycott in support of immigrant rights say the event will include a rally in San Ysidro and a march to the border, where sympathizers plan to meet protesters from Tijuana.

The event is expected to coincide with nationwide rallies and work and school walkouts aimed at pressuring Congress to pass an immigration law that includes a path to citizenship for millions of people living illegally in the United States.

Members of the local chapter of the March 25 Coalition said the 2.8-mile walk will begin at 1 p.m. at San Ysidro Community Park. Participants will walk to the border fence and return to the park.

The organization is named after the coalition that put together last month's rally in Los Angeles that drew more than a half-million people.

Organizers are telling sympathizers to wear white T-shirts and to join them after the march for an afternoon of speeches, music, voter registration drives and cultural performances. They are also asking Tijuana residents who work or shop in San Diego County not to cross the border on May 1, which is International Labor Day.

“We want to demonstrate how we can impact the economy and what the country would be like on a day without immigrants,” said Elva Salas, an organizer. The announcement came as talk of boycotting work, school and stores continues to heat up across the country.

In San Diego, several Latino owned businesses have said they would close that day, and workers from supermarkets, auto repair shops and restaurants are asking for the day off.

Not all immigrant advocates support the boycott.

Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Los Angeles and a staunch backer of the recent immigration rallies, issued a statement urging people not to leave work or school. He suggested that protesters join the rallies afterward.

Religious organizations, including those who helped organize the April 9 march in downtown San Diego, have expressed concern that not showing up for work or school may hurt those who are trying to legalize their status. They said they plan to hold alternative activities in the afternoon of May 1 that include citizenship and voter registration drives.
