Oregonians for Immigration Reform report:

January 22, 2009

OFIR Members and supporters:

Below is a print out of the Marion County Jail inmate population. Bear in mind this is data from just one Oregon county jail system.

Note that of the 529 inmates in the Marion County Jail, 87 have ICE holds. That represents over 16 percent of the inmates. The annual cost to incarcerate 87 inmates for a year is about $2.5 million.

The $2.5 million cost to taxpayers is in addition to the cost of housing inmates with ICE holds at the Oregon State Penitentiary system, federal prisons or at any of the other 35 Oregon county jails.

While it is easy to calculate the cost to house illegal alien inmates it is impossible to calculate the cost to a family who has had someone murdered or raped or kidnapped by an illegal alien who should not have been in our country in the first place.

Note that there are 19 ICE inmates incarcerated with meth holds. Last year the High Intensity Drug Area Program released it annual threat assessment for Oregon. They calculated in their report that the total direct cost to Oregon due to the methamphetamine and marijuana trade is close to $3 billion a year. Most law enforcement agencies estimate that over 80 percent of the meth in Oregon is brought here from Mexico primarily by illegal aliens.
