Mariposa County cracking down on smuggling
Updated 3:17 p.m., Thursday, November 15, 2012
Associated Press
PHOENIX (AP) — Maricopa County's crackdown on smuggling has netted more than a dozen arrests over the past two days.
The sheriff's office said Thursday that 16 illegal immigrants have been arrested since Tuesday. In all, 42 arrests have been made during the 16-day crackdown.
One of this week's incidents was triggered when deputies saw large bundles being loaded into a vehicle on the side of a busy roadway.
Detectives approached the car and four men fled on foot. Two others sped away in the car but stopped soon after and ran into the desert.
After an hour of searching, detectives found and arrested four men. They also seized three large bales of marijuana that weighed more than 120 pounds.
Authorities say two illegal immigrants were found in the trunk of a car during a separate chase this week.
