TUCSON - A Mexican citizen wanted for first degree murder out of Pima County has been apprehended in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
Max Montijo-LaMadrid, 34, was taken into custody Tuesday and is awaiting extradition to Tucson.
Montijo-LaMadrid was wanted by U.S. authorities in connection to the 2001 murder of a 16-year-old high school student.
Tanee Natividad was killed on November 18, 2001 in Tucson. The 16-year-old Palo Verde High School student was at a Jack in the Box restaurant with a friend when Natividad became the unintended victim of a drive-by shooting.
U.S. Marshals say that Montijo-LaMadrid was at the restaurant looking for revenge and thought his target was in the same car Natividad was riding in. He allegedly fired upon the car without caring who was inside.
Montijo-LaMadrid was able to avoid capture by assuming another identity and moving frequently within Mexico. Last week, U.S. Marshals traveled to Hermosillo to coordinate the investigation with Mexican authorities, leading to the fugitive's capture.
David P. Gonzales, U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona, stated, "the arrest of Montijo-LaMadrid was the direct result of the close working relationships developed with Mexican law enforcement officials and the U.S. Marshal Service."
