GA- House Votes For Immigrant Employee Status Verification
House Votes For Immigrant Employee Status Verification
House Votes For E-Verify In Immigration Reform
Channel 2's Richard Elliot reports.

ATLANTA -- House members voted to keep a key provision of an immigration reform bill just hours after state senators voted to remove it.
Just before 11 p.m. Monday, the state Senate passed its version of immigration reform. However, senators removed the section requiring private companies to use the government's e-verify system to check the immigration status of their employees. Critics said the Senate caved to business interests. Some Georgia businesses, particularly agriculture, oppose the bill because they fear it will hurt them and the state's economy.
But state Rep. Matt Ramsey, R-Peachtree City, the House sponsor of the bill, believes the Senate took the teeth right out of immigration reform.
"The No. 1 reason illegals are coming here is for access for jobs," Ramsey told Channel 2's Richard Elliot. "So doing an illegal immigration reform bill that doesn't get at the No. 1 incentive illegal aliens are coming to Georgia to me is a sham."
Ramsey and other supporters fought to return the e-verify provision into the bill. The bill is headed back to the Senate since the House changes.
State Rep. Pedro "Pete" Marin, D-Gwinnett, a long-time opponent of the bill, told Elliot he thinks senators made the decision based on business interests.
"One of the main purposes of this legislation was e-verify and seeing that they took that section out, well, you know, I think they heard loudly from the business community," said Marin.
Including Tuesday, there are only two days left in the 2011 legislative session.

Georgia HB 87
I posted a related letter from the farm union in Georgia. Folks, the key man on committee is a Republican who owns a farm. He does not give a hoot (nor do some of the other Senators), about the wishes of the voters.
I am not a farmer, but I am sure with and almost 10% unemployment rate, the farmers could find American labor.
The Farm Union should set up a hiring office in Atlanta, (with a 10.2% unemployment rate.) I believe they would get an adequate amount of labor they would have plenty. They also have H2B if there is a shortage.
Again, I do not know the complete issues with hiring. I do know the farmers want to support illegal immigrants to work on the farms.

House rejects Senate immigration enforcement bill, offers tougher substitute
By Jeremy Redmon
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia’s House on Tuesday rejected the Senate’s immigration enforcement legislation and is now offering a more stringent substitute that requires many private businesses to confirm their new hires are eligible to work in the United States.
By a vote of 115 to 59, the House approved the 26-page substitute to House Bill 87. That substitute requires private businesses with more than 10 employees to use a federal work authorization program called E-Verify. The Senate stripped a similar provision out of the bill after nearly three hours of debate and several votes on amendments Monday evening.
The sponsor of HB 87 -- Rep. Matt Ramsey, R-Peachtree City – said the E-Verify requirement is one of the most important provisions of his bill because many illegal immigrants come to Georgia to find work.
“The Senate… took out many of the provisions that we worked very hard on as part of the comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2011,â€
