Mass. immigration plan likely short-lived
BOSTON, MA, United States (UPI) -- A deal Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney signed allowing state troopers to arrest illegal immigrants will be rescinded next month by the new governor.
Under the agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, troopers from five specialized units will receive training on immigration law and will be certified to question, detain, and arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.
The agreement was opposed by Governor-elect Deval Patrick, who takes office on Jan. 4, about the time the troopers will complete their training, the Boston Globe reported Thursday.
Richard Chacon, spokesman for Patrick, said the new governor plans to immediately rescind the agreement as it adds more of a burden to the officers` workload, and is 'impractical and unwise.'
Massachusetts became the ninth jurisdiction to enter into such immigration policing agreements with federal officials since the practice was authorized in 1996. The list includes Alabama, Florida, and a few counties in California and North Carolina, the Globe said.

12-14-2006, 07:48 PM #2As much as I want the border closed and our rapidly expanding population controlled these agreements between local police and the federal government (won't give it the respect of a "capital" letter) give me serious pause for concern. Given the status of the nation beyond just the immigration issue ... specifically the dissolution of our country ... I strongly feel that the states should be reclaiming authority onto themselves as opposed to handing it away for "benefits" from the fed.immigration policing agreements with federal officials"Liberty CANNOT be preserved without general knowledge among people" John Adams (August 1765)

12-14-2006, 08:41 PM #3How does this guy even know how it is effecting the "workload"? He doesn't have access to that information yet. You elected him and he is already not representing the people. I think his first day in office diserves massive telephone calls. What a waste of tax payer dollars and the officers time for some nim whit to show up and throw out something good for the state.Richard Chacon, spokesman for Patrick, said the new governor plans to immediately rescind the agreement as it adds more of a burden to the officers` workload, and is 'impractical and unwise.'
