Tucson Immigration Officials Release More Than 700 Asylum Seekers From Detention
Homeland Security says there just isn't enough room at ICE family detention centers to accommodate a rise in asylum-seeking families.

700 Asylum Seekers ...

As many as 700 immigrants were released by Tucson immigration officials over the weekend in the Tucson Sector. Immigration officials say most are pregnant women or families with children who are seeking asylum from Central American countries.
Teresa Cavendish, the executive director of Catholic Community Services, says these are people who pose little or no security risk. She says community churches and nonprofits that help immigrants seeking asylum had very little notice to prepare for the large numbers showing up at shelters over the weekend.
"It had not been announced publicly that this was going to happen. However, just prior to it happening, we were advised. So we have had a little bit of time to ramp up and put some opportunities together and cooperate with folks out in the community who were able to offer us space and resources," said Cavendish
Tucson Sector Chief Rudy Karisch confirmed the mass releases and said they are happening all along the border, from San Diego to Laredo, Texas. He said there has been a 50 percent daily increase in the number of immigrants turning themselves in at the border from this time last year. And, that the directive is coming directly from Homeland Security in Washington.

"We are seeing large groups of people that are surrendering right in that area between us and Yuma right now – so we have seen some very high numbers," said Karisch.
There are three main family detention centers, two in Texas and one in Pennsylvania. Together they can house around 3,600 people. The Department of Homeland Security says those facilities are full.
Karisch said: "That's the reality of what we are facing right now, with the increase in family units we are seeing right now. It's problematic to get them into some of these family centers".
As for the taxpayer cost? Zero, when immigration officials release a family to stay with friends or relatives in the U.S. until their asylum hearing date. Compare that to $300 per day, per person - or more than $1 million a day for 3,600 individuals held in one of those three family detention centers.
City Councilman Steve Kozachik's office notified the media that it is accepting donations that it will distribute to migrants released by immigration officials over the weekend.
The requested items include newly purchased undergarments, socks, backpacks, Gatorade and travel blankets. The media release is asking that the donations be brought to the Ward 6 City Council office, 3202 E 1st St., weekdays before 5 p.m.

ICE is Releasing Hundreds of Detained Migrants With an Ankle Monitor and No Institutional Support

The migrant detention facilities in Southern Arizona are overflowing, and in response, ICE is abruptly releasing hundreds of detained asylum-seekers onto the streets with no institutional support other than a location-tracking ankle monitor, according to a new report by NBC News.
While releasing migrants from detention isn’t inherently a bad thing (quite the opposite), NBC notes that because of the capacity of facilities on the border, ICE is sending migrants out into the street without following normal protocol, like making sure that they have the ability to find relatives or make their court date.
And this is just the start of a new normal all across the border.
Per NBC:
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are releasing the families from detention en masse without following their usual protocol that ensures immigrants have a means to travel to their court hearing and reunite with potential relatives in the U.S.
The adults have ankle monitors to track their whereabouts until their scheduled court date to make their case before a judge for asylum.
“This is the start of a dam breaking,” the official said. “You’ll start to see this all across the southern border soon.”
The report explains that usually, ICE detention facilities hold migrants for a certain amount of time and make sure that they have adequate travel plans to meet relatives and the ability to make their court date in the future. Now, because of the sheer volume of asylum seekers, the government isn’t able to do that. An ICE spokesperson blamed it on the new settlement that says children can only be detained for 20 days.
Per NBC:ICE spokeswoman Yasmeen O’Keefe said because of the volume of families presenting themselves along the Arizona border, ICE can no longer review each immigrant’s travel plans prior to release without violating a federal court agreement, known as the Flores settlement, that limits the amount of time children can be detained to 20 days.
What this means, however, is that non-government organizations will be taking the brunt of caring for hundreds of people who have been abruptly released with no transportation, housing, or other necessities.
ICE has been directly asking churches in the area, like the Shadow Rock United Church of Christ, to take over care for many refugees.
Per the Phoenix ABC affiliate KNXV-TV:For Shadow Rock, Curry said ICE asked for the church to house and care for their group for a couple of nights and provide transportation to bus stops to connect with their families.Per ABC News:
The families are mostly from Central America, according to Abeth Spencer, the director of communications for the church. Shadow Rock is providing temporary shelter and expects people to leave within a day or two.To check in, I reached out to a couple nonprofits in the Phoenix area — I’ll update this post if I hear back.
“We’re trying to provide hospitality, companionship, and even just a smile,” Spencer said in a statement. “We will provide a safe place to sleep, food to eat, showers and companionship to our neighbors while they prepare for the next leg of their journey.”

So all of these people are the same asylum-seeking scum bag con artists being protected by a federal court agreement. Why is ICE calling "churches" and sending them over as "refugees"? I'm glad we're not paying for them, though. But it would seem that someone needs to repeal these stupid asylum laws. Why aren't they being denied their request during the "credible fear" interview and booted out? These people didn't leave out of "fear of persecution", they left for the same reason any ole illegal alien comes here, to run drugs, make money, run criminal enterprises, mooch off of relatives, suck on welfare, steal jobs, undercut our entrepreneurs, etc., etc., etc.
