Massive Latino voter registration drive launched

Massive Latino voter registration drive launched

By JULIANA BARBASSA, Associated Press Writer
Thu Sep 25, 3:18 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO - A coalition of Spanish-language media and community organizations kicked off a massive voter registration drive Thursday, aiming to register nearly one million Hispanic voters.

Hispanics have long been seen as a potentially powerful voting force, but that promise has yet to fully materialize.

This campaign — whose name in Spanish, "Ya es Hora, Ve y Vota!" translates as "It's Time, Go Vote" — intends to change that by providing eligible new citizens with the information and the incentive they need to take part in the American political process, organizers said.

"This effort will not only put voter registration forms in the hands on Latinos, but also may help shape the political landscape," said Janet Murgia, president and CEO of National Council of La Raza.

Only 47 percent of Hispanic citizens of any race turned out to vote in the 2004 presidential election, compared with 67 percent for non-Hispanic white citizens and 60 percent for blacks, according to census figures.

The campaign's print media partner, impreMedia, will insert 990,500 voter registration cards into its publications between Friday and Monday in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas.

Community organizers will follow up with information on how to register and why it's important to vote. Their message will be reinforced by television and radio spots by media giant Univision Communication and Entravision Communications.

Hispanics traditionally have leaned Democratic, but organizers emphasized this effort was nonpartisan and intended only to increase civic participation and make the Hispanic voice heard on issues that matter most to them: the economy, education and immigration reform.

"This is neither a pro-Democratic or a pro-Republican effort," said Mike Fernandez, Vice President of Public Affairs, State Farm Insurance Companies, which helped fund the campaign." "It's pro-voting, and pro-American."

If they are successful in their endeavor---

If they are successful in their endeavor---it will be one more nail in the coffin of waht was one of America's most beautiful productive states.

Now one of its major cities is run by a gang-banger and under control of the illegal gangs while the police chief and the jefe gangbanger prevent the police from upholding the law.

Do America's eastern European immigrants (legal) get a publicly financed voter registration drive? Why should there be any ethnically oriented voter registration drives, unless they are financed entirely by private funds?

This is America - not Latin America. English is our language. If Hispanics cant communicate in English, they shouldnt be allowed to vote.

The article says this effort was "partly" funded by State Farm Insurance. LaRaza gets public money, among other sources.

24,000 new voters registered in Illinois within 3 months? If they are legal residents this many just now registering???

    Immigrant voting push strong
By Antonio Olivo | Chicago Tribune reporter
    12:11 AM CDT, October 3, 2008

During the last three months, immigrant groups in Illinois have registered about 24,000 new voters, part of an aggressive last push to influence next month's elections.

Although the subject of Immigration has barely been broached by either presidential candidate, frustrations with the system are spurring registration drives in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and elsewhere that have seen nearly half a million new voters registered by immigrant groups in 12 states.

A campaign in Illinois and six other stateslaunched last week to register 1 million new Latino voters hopes to sway 46 Electoral College votes, organizers said. In solidly Democratic Illinois, activists are targeting suburban areas where potentially close congressional elections could lead to more support in Congress for Immigration reforms. Nearly 200,000 voters in Illinois have registered since January, bringing the state total to 7.4 million, Illinois State Board of Elections figures show.

"This is now getting to the point where the impact of the electorate is going to have to be taken seriously," said Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which is also launching a $500,000 get-out-the-vote effort next week featuring phone banks, mailers and offers to drive voters to polling sites Nov. 4.

As they target Chinatown, Bridgeview, Chicago Lawn and 17 other communities in a scramble for new voters before Tuesday's registration deadline, volunteers have tapped into a mosaic of the immigrant experience that defines the Chicago region.
