Mexican man gets prison sentence for robbing illegal immigrants


TUCSON, Ariz. A Mexican man charged with robbing other illegal immigrants at gunpoint has been sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Forty-two-year-old Jose Domingo Valdez-Alvarez pleaded guilty in June to being an illegal immigrant in possession of a firearm.

Federal prosecutors say Valdez-Alvarez admitted to authorities that he went to the border near the Tohono O'odham (toh-HO'-noh OH'-tuhm) village of Vamori last March armed with a .38-caliber revolver.

He said he wore dark clothing and a mask and would wait for illegal immigrants to cross and rob them.

Authorities say Border Patrol agents arrested Valdez-Alvarez, of Sinaloa, minutes before he planned to rob another group of illegal immigrants.
