McCain adjusts immigration stance to emphasize border security first

    Associated Press - November 3, 2007 11:13 PM ET

SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A shift in John McCain's stance on immigration.

Earlier this year, the Republican presidential candidate argued the U.S. must combine border security efforts with a temporary worker program and an eventual path to citizenship for many illegal immigrants.

McCain led on the issue in the Senate with Democrat Edward Kennedy. But things crumbled in June when Congress again failed to enact a broad immigration proposal that he'd championed.

The Arizona senator says he listened to what the public was saying when the legislation failed -- and is responding.

In South Carolina, he said the American public's priority is to secure the borders. He says the rest is still needed, but will have to come later.

No, a massive guest worker program and amnesty are not needed!
