McCain backs Brewer's request for border troops
McCain backs Brewer's request for border troops
Mar. 27,2009
The Arizona Republic
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, announced his support Thursday for Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's request for more National Guard troops on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Violent drug cartels are believed to be responsible for bloodshed in Mexico and kidnappings and home invasions on the U.S. side of the border.
The Mexican government is in the midst of crackdown on the narcotics traffickers.
"We do not have sufficient personnel down there. So I agree with the governors of Arizona and Texas in their request for more help with enforcement, at least until we get sufficient trained personnel sent down there," McCain said in a telephone interview.
"There was a big shootout in Nogales not that along ago, where they (the Mexican government) were asking us to give them ammunition. So it's appropriate given the level of violence.
"I hope they're not needed permanently," he added.
Brewer made the request in a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and reiterated it Tuesday after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced a series of new border-security initiatives.
Napolitano on Tuesday said expanded use of the National Guard on the border is still under consideration.
"We're grateful for Senator McCain's support for the governor's request to Secretary Gates. We're hopeful that we'll hear something back from the secretary soon," said Paul Senseman, a Brewer spokesman.
