McCain challenges other candidates on immigration

McCain challenges other candidates on immigration

    http://www.tampabays10.com/news/nationa ... ryid=55873

Republican presidential candidate John McCain is challenging critics of a proposed immigration overhaul plan to provide a better alternative.

The Arizona senator criticized his leading rivals, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, when a reporter asked him about their opposition to a Senate compromise brokered earlier this month.

McCain says anyone who doesn't like the plan should offer their own idea.

The plan before Congress includes tougher security, guest workers and a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.

McCain says the U.S. can't afford to continue to allow an estimated 12 million people to live in the country illegally.

    McCain's a joke!

The current debate is a PRIME example of why Comprehensive Immigration Reform does not work. The goons are so busy arguing over a Guest Worker Program and what to do with the illegals here, that they are ignoring border security. Sure, ChappaKennedy has brought it up off and on, as have a few others, but they are not discussing the specifics. None of the GWP talk will mean anything if we don't secure the border. By the way, as they are arguing over these issues and ignoring the big one, millions more illegals continue to pour in.

McCain's act is old and tired, just like the senator himself.

    Easy one McCain!

Secure the border and enforce our existing immigration laws for a few years. Try it!

I actually got a snail mail letter from McCain when I wrote him to protest this scamnesty. Get this. He said we need this bill because our immigration laws are not working.

Now how would he know that? They were passed in 1986 and their still brand new from lack of use, like an old vintage car that went from the factory to the garage, and stayed there untouched by human hands.

Now there's a candidate who is definitely out of touch with America.

McCain slipping in polls -- Not surprising !

More proof that the Bush/Kennedy amnesty bill is politically toxic:

2008 Republican Presidential Primary: Romney Catches McCain in National Poll for GOP Nomination rasmussenreports.com
Tue May 29, 9:32 AM ET

The immigration reform debate may be shaking up the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has inched past Arizona Senator John McCain (news, bio, voting record) for second place in the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone poll. Just two weeks ago, Romney was in fourth place among GOP hopefuls.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) remains on top with 25% support. That's essentially unchanged from last week. In fact, Giuliani has been at 25% or 26% in the polls for four straight weeks.

This week, Giuliani is followed by Romney at 16%, McCain at 15%, and former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson at 12%. While Romney's one-point edge over McCain is statistically insignificant, it's worth noting that McCain had a six-point advantage over Romney just two weeks ago.

McCain, once considered the dominant frontrunner, has been strongly supportive of the immigration reform bill being debated in the Senate. That bill is unpopular with the general public—just 26% of voters favor its passage.

Romney has announced his strong opposition to the immigration bill and Giuliani called it a "hodgepodgeÂ… without any central focus." Thompson said "We should scrap this bill and the whole debate until we can convince the American people that we have secured the borders or at least have made great headway." Most Americans are willing to support an enforcement-only approach at this time.

On Wednesday, Rasmussen Reports will release updated polling data on support for the Senate immigration bill.

Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Republican nominating contest every Tuesday. Results for the Democrats are updated on Mondays. The current survey is based upon national telephone interviews with 467 Likely Republican Primary Voters conducted May 21-23, 2007. The margin of sampling error is +/- 5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. The Rasmussen Reports sample includes not only Republicans, but also independents who say they are likely to vote in a Republican Primary.

Other Rasmussen Reports polling shows that Giuliani could be competitive with Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton in the traditionally Blue States of New Jersey and Connecticut. However, in a home state match-up, Clinton would win by a landslide in New York.

Among all voters nationwide, 27% say the will definitely vote for Giuliani if he is on the ballot in 2008. Thirty-seven percent (37%) will definitely vote against. The numbers are identical for McCain. Eighteen percent (18%) will definitely vote for Romney while 36% are poised to vote against him. For Thompson, it's 22% definitely for and 30% definitely against.

In general election match-ups, Giuliani is essentially even with Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama, and former Senator John Edwards.

Those Democrats lead all other Republican hopefuls at this time (see summary of general election match-ups for all Democratic and Republican Presidential candidates).

Rasmussen Reports also regularly tracks favorability ratings for Members of Congress, Other Political Figures, and Journalists along with public attitudes towards Congress, the War on Terror, and other topics.

Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Democrat Nomination Process every Monday and on the Republican contest every Tuesday. Results for the Generic Congressional Ballot are updated monthly.

Rasmussen Reports is an electronic publishing firm specializing in the collection, publication, and distribution of public opinion polling information.

And it's the Rasmussen report that gives the true polling on this scamnesty bill. More people are against it.

Fred Thompson said today he will announce his candidacy in July. On the 4th, I think.
