The president and office manager of two companies that furnish temporary employees to suburban warehouses for janitorial jobs and other work were charged Monday with hiring dozens of illegal immigrants to form their labor pool.

The president of the two businesses, Clinton Roy Perkins, 65, of Wayne, and his son-in-law, Christopher Reindl, 40, of St. Charles, were also accused in a one-count criminal information filed in federal court of paying the workers in cash and failing to make payroll tax and other deductions from their pay.

Federal officials said the two men repeatedly withdrew $9,800 to pay the wages of the temporary workers in hopes that would avoid triggering the requirement that banks report withdrawals of $10,000 or more to the government.

Perkins' attorney Robert Stephenson and Reindl's attorney Anthony Masciopinto did not immediately return messages left at their law offices on Monday.

Federal officials are seeking the forfeiture of $488,095 from Perkins. They said that amount was seized from various bank accounts as well as from the Bensenville offices of the two companies, Anna II Inc. and Can Do It Inc.

Gary J. Hartwig, head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office of investigations in Chicago, said in a statement that employers "must comply with the nation's immigration laws if we are to have an effective immigration enforcement strategy in this country."

Hiring illegal immigrants carries a maximum penalty under federal statute of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
