McCain: We'll Try to Pass Immigration Changes After GOP Primaries

by Tony Lee 29 Oct 2013, 1:37 PM PDT

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) gave the clearest indication that proponents of comprehensive immigration reform may make their final--and strongest--push to get legislation passed next year after House Republicans make it through their primaries.

“I think conventional wisdom is that time is not on our side,” McCain told reporters on Monday after an event in Chicago. “But there are a number of members of Congress who have primaries and when those primaries are done, they may be more inclined to address the issue of comprehensive immigration reform.”

President Barack Obama has urged Congress to pass immigration reform legislation this year. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is reportedly going to bring legislation to the floor within the next month and other House Republican leaders have indicated support for piecemeal pieces of legislation that can make it to conference with the Senate, where proponents and opponents of immigration reform had said a pathway to citizenship will prevail.

Though the Congressional Budget Office has determined the Senate's immigration bill would lower the wages of working class Americans, House Republicans are reportedly working on piecemeal pieces of legislation to eventually get to conference with the Senate. McCain also said on Monday that the House should just "pass something" to get to conference with the Senate. House Republicans like Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) are reportedly working on legislation that would grant a pathway to citizenship to all of the country's illegal immigrants.

McCain's comments indicate even if the current push to enact comprehensive immigration reform fails, the real fight may be in the spring and summer of next year, when Obama could use immigration as a midterm election issue and Republican lawmakers will not be worried about primaries in the 2014 election cycle.

In 2010, McCain made a right turn on immigration, infamously promising to "complete the danged fence" as he was fighting for his political life to win re-election in Arizona. Shortly after he got elected to serve another term, McCain quickly lurched back to the left, becoming a champion for comprehensive immigration reform and calling Tea Partiers whose support he needed in 2010 "hobbits" and "wacko birds."

This article and these comments by McCain are a good sign. It indicates a fall back position. If they are falling back and we have pushed amnesty back into 2014 we are in good shape if we can win in the elections!

I just cannot stress enough how important the 2014 elections will be to this country, the administration will have 2 years to run wild if they gain control of both house and senate. The left has worked for years to push us into socialism and if they gain another 2 years it will be a disaster. Progressives/radicals push for open borders uncontrolled welfare while people with full time jobs decline. I begin my working life in early 60's with half the population we now have, during that time(60"s) we had more full time workers then we do today. We simply cannot maintain our current path with over half the population receiving some type government aid, in the end people will be living like those in a third world country, no matter if by design or ignorance the results will be the same.
I'm old with many opinions few solutions.

John McCain – We’ll Pass Amnesty after the Primaries

    Oh Boy.

Everyone’s least favorite RINO is at it again. Making waves and stirring up trouble. I thought that maybe we were finally past all of the Republican civil war ridiculousness, but John McCain can’t leave well enough alone.

“I think conventional wisdom is that time is not on our side,” McCain told reporters. “But there are a number of members of Congress who have primaries and when those primaries are done, they may be more inclined to address the issue of comprehensive immigration reform.”

    Seriously?

I had to read this paragraph a few times before it sunk in. John McCain is basically saying, “Hey – we gotta make sure the conservatives don’t primary us first… then we can pass amnesty. Because once we’re past the primary… who else are they gonna vote for?”

I have to hand it to McCain, the man’s hubris knows no bounds. He straight up tells us that he and his allies are going to slow play amnesty because they know we’ll vote for them anyway.

The worst part is – he’s probably right.

I mean how many elections does the average conservative voter walk into the booth and pull the lever for the Republican simply because he’s the “lesser of two evils?” That’s the ironic twist on voting for the lesser of two evils, isn’t it? You say, “Well I have to do it this time, but next time hopefully we get a good candidate.” BUT - because we keep voting for the less evil dude, the Republicans keep nominating them because they aren’t conservative and we’ll vote for them.

Look, the point here is that McCain is just telling the truth.

The Republican establishment will pass amnesty. They’ll wait until after the primaries so that their preferred candidates don’t face conservative opposition – and then they’ll “mostly” join with Democrats to pass comprehensive immigration reform (including amnesty).

But it’s our fault, isn’t it? We keep electing these liberal RINO freaks.

So, what do we do now?

This is a great sign! It is a fallback position and possible signal that they know they cant win in 2013. If we stop Amnesty till Jan 1, 2014 the chances are high we have them pushed back to 2017!
