They often get paid in cash under the table. They don’t show up in the unemployment rate. And when construction jobs disappear, so do these workers, many of whom are transient immigrants.

Unable to find jobs, construction workers are leaving the area to find work in areas like North Carolina, Tennessee and Las Vegas.
