MCSO arrests drug smugglers south of Gila Bend

GILA BEND, Ariz. -
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arrested several drug smugglers south of Gila Bend, off SR 85, on Friday.

Deputies tried to arrest the group of illegal immigrants, who were carrying 236 pounds of marijuana. Two of them ran away.

Of the five people arrested, one was 17 years old, and the last was a man in a pickup truck who admitted he was paid $500 to pick up the group. That man was a U.S. citizen.

During an interview with detectives, the men admitted they were being paid $200 each to carry the drugs across the border.


They were booked into jail on drug-related charges. Deputies were not able to locate the two runners.
