MD. Bill Would Limit Local Immigration Policing
Md. Bill Would Limit Local Immigration Policing
Tuesday, Nov 19, 2013 | Updated 9:02 AM EST
The American Civil Liberties Union says a state senator is seeking to limit local police involvement in immigration enforcement.
The ACLU says Democrat Victor Ramirez of Prince George's County is announcing the legislation Tuesday in Hyattsville. A Ramirez staff member said Monday that details of the bill were still being ironed out.
The ACLU says the Maryland Trust Act will restore community trust in local law enforcement.
Immigration reform advocates have been pushing for a Maryland version of the California Trust Act, signed into law last month. The California law prohibits local police from holding immigrants for transfer to federal immigration authorities unless they've been charged or convicted of certain serious crimes.
The ACLU also says it's releasing a report Tuesday on the use of immigration detainers in Maryland.
