Latin America outraged at EU plan

Latin America outraged at EU plan
    By Daniel Schweimler
    BBC News. Buenos Aires

Half a million illegal immigrants arrive in Europe every year

Leaders across Latin America have reacted angrily to a new EU law that could jail illegal immigrants for up to 18 months before they are deported.

One president called it a hate initiative. Another said it was an attack on people's rights and lives.

Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans live and work in Europe, many of them without permission.

Many do jobs that Europeans do not want to do, providing a vital source of income for poor families back home.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez led the reaction, threatening to cut oil exports to Europe unless the EU retracted the measure.

Rafael Correa, the Ecuadorean leader, made the statement that Latin American countries should present a united front against what he called a hate initiative.

Bolivian President Evo Morales said Latin America should work with Africa against laws that he said attacked people's rights and lives.

The European Union on Wednesday adopted the measures, which could come into force in 2010.

The law will oblige EU members to choose between issuing residency permits to the estimated half a million illegal immigrants who enter each year, or returning them to their country of origin.

The head of the South American Mercosur trade bloc, Carlos Alvarez, believes the new measure openly violates human rights.

He said the EU should remember that in the past, millions of Europeans came to Latin America as victims of hunger, war, injustice and totalitarian regimes, and were assimilated with no problems.

Peruvian human rights spokesman Wilfredo Ardito said the new law was a hypocritical effort to make it illegal to be poor.

Of course they're outraged. That's 18 months of no remittances sent back from their invaders.

Is it possible there is no Spanish word for "illegal"?

After listening to a former immigration agent speak, they are probably angry too at the fact that many criminals will be returning to their nations to cause problems there too.

GO EU! I applaud this action by the European Union.

Latin America, you have a wonderful land, rich with loveliness, resources, people and more opportunity than you can evidently imagine on your own soils.

Stop insulting the world with your ignorant and arrogant actions and statements about what other citizens of other nations do on their soils and start behaving with some dignity on your own.

We're tired of the sob stories that are the result of your own governments.

We're out of sympathy for your own self-generated poverty.

We're done underwriting your poor so oligarchical elites in your nations and ours can live like Kings and Queens and rule the world.

You take care of your people. You share your wealth with your people. You run your mouths on your own soils about your own social and economic issues. You stand up for your own people in your own land on your own soils to find the solutions to your problems within your own national territory.

    Because, we're done.

Itis impossible for these people, Latin Americans specifically, to comprehend that they cannot shove their poor, undereducated and criminals on the rest of us to take care of, so they do not have to think about it.

They have no comprehension of the phrase "illegal alien", because they glamorize these people who cross into other nations illegally, as heroes, not as the invaders they truly are.

Such a HUGE sense of entitlement, and it runs all the way through these people, and they have no shame to expect everyone else to pick up the tab for their poverty.

So true, AE. So it's time for Americans to give them a lesson on just that.

Secure the Border, Enforce Us Immigration Law, Deport All Illegal Aliens and their Offspring.

    They'll get the message.
