Dream Act foes put law on hold

ANNAPOLIS | Organizers of a petition against Maryland’s Dream Act said Thursday they have collected more than 100,000 signatures - nearly double the amount needed to force a November 2012 referendum on the law.

Opponents of the law, which would allow many illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition rates, had until Thursday night to turn in at least 55,736 valid voter signatures to suspend the law until a 2012 statewide vote.

Organizers already turned in nearly 58,000 signatures on May 31, 47,288 of which were validated and approved by the state Board of Elections.

Delegate Neil C. Parrott, Washington Republican, who has led the petition effort, said he expected to turn in more than 42,000 more Thursday night - only 8,448 of which will have to be validated for organizers to reach their goal.

As a resident of Maryland *State of corruption and gloom*, This Dream Act *taxpayer nightmare* that received well over the 55k needed to get it to referendum is the one bit of hope we have for recovery. Voter fraud is very high in Md because of our Governor O'malley's big support of his "NEW AMERICANS* with big costs to taxpayers.. Md pays in excess of $2billion a year to O'malley's "NEW AMERICANS".. We pay in excess of $1billion a year to support their children through 12th grade, now we were expected to continue their support through college? I don't think so!! Thank you Alipac for all your support and encouragement..

The final tally of total signatures collected is 132,485.

We need 55,736 valid signatures to get this issue on the ballot.

Among the "first round" of collected signatures, 47,288 were valid.

That means to succeed we only need 8,448 of the 74,980 signatures handed in last night to be valid -- or an 11 percent acceptance rate.

Casa de Maryland is FURIOUS right now, and are vowing to overturn the petition and give illegals in-state tuition.

The Catholic Church is screaming mad, and one Catholic leader was just on the news and said since they have access to ALL of the names of people who signed the petition, ALL of us WILL be contacted before next year's election in hopes to change our minds. Why is the Catholic church now getting involved with politics??? They are in for a rude awakening when they knock on MY door.
