LePage absolutely right to overturn 'Sanctuary State' policy

If the true leadership qualities of a politician can be tested by the wisdom of the policies he proposes and the character of the enemies he makes, Gov. Paul LePage had a great very first day in office.

In overturning the disgraceful "Sanctuary State" policy for illegal aliens of former Gov. John Baldacci, LePage has shown his "mettle".

His correct decision also has provoked "hysterical howls" of protest from the usual suspects and organizations.

Checking the status of immigrants in the state ensures that American and state sovereignty is being protected, winning the huge respect of our own people and warning any potential foreign lawbreakers.

Often these "invaders" pose a real great danger to American and legal residents because they are not screened and many include "border-crashing criminals and gang members".

The national news accounts are filled with incidents of very serious crimes committed by illegals.

They and their children also severely drain tens of billions of dollars from our welfare system, our schools and our hospitals meant for legal citizens and U.S. citizens.

Changing this abhorent, foolish policy is also good politics.

Ask newly elected Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.

There is no issue in America on which there is more disagreement between our partisan cultural and political elites than illegal immigration.

The state's sincere "kudos" also go to Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for helping kill any "amnesty" for illegals via the so-called "Dream Act."

That wise decision stands in stark contrast to their politically correct foolishness in voting to allow homosexuals to serve openly in the military, repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Residents can only hope it works out better for the Marine Corps than it did the Catholic Church.

And speaking of the Catholic Church: Why is the Portland Diocese on this issue making common cause with the ACLU, the most virulent anti-American, anti-Christian organization in America?

Bishop Richard Malone should seriously reconsider his alliances, policy and personnel.
