MEQUON - The Mequon Public Safety Committee has sent a proposal to the common council that could help the police department in identifying those they think are illegal aliens during traffic enforcement.

Mequon Police Chief Steve Graff said his department does not have a written policy on screening police detainees.

However, officers routinely screen persons they contact through the National Crime Information Center and the Crime Information Bureau to verify identification and access information detailing the individual’s criminal record, Graff said. Those who are arrested are fingerprinted, which helps officers determine who the person is and, subsequently, updates the department’s database on the individual, Graff added.
