BLUFFTON -- The mobile Mexican consulate, a team of workers based in Raleigh, will be on Hilton Head Island today to issue identification cards for Mexican citizens living abroad, in addition to offering passports, birth certificates and legal advice.
The cards -- known as consular IDs -- were originally meant to help the Mexican government track of residents living abroad, but are increasingly

used by immigrants to help open bank accounts and obtain other services that require a valid documentation in the U.S.

The mobile consulate usually visits Hilton Head once a year, and will be at Holy Family Catholic Church on Pope Avenue starting at 8 a.m.

All 500 available slots were filled within the first three hours, said Nora Bess, director of the Hispanic ministry at the church.
The consulate doesn't ask questions about a person's legal status legal. And a State Department spokeswoman said the federal government doesn't interfere with consulate operations.
The purpose of the consular IDs is to give Mexicans living abroad, including legal immigrants, a way to identify themselves to banks, law enforcement or other authorities, said Guido Arochi, a community affairs representative for the consulate in Raleigh.

Juan Campos, president of the Latin American Council of South Carolina, which helped organize the event, said the identification can be used to obtain a tax identification number from the U.S. government, which allows them to pay income taxes. Campos said more Hispanic immigrants want to pay taxes because it could help them obtain citizenship later."We're wishing well for all those people that are undocumented to be able to get their affairs straight," Campos said. "I think even though it's very controversial, there is a benefit that the community and the country benefit from from these blue collar laborers."

Why is it that the only time Messyco helps its masses of poverty stricken criminals is when they are doing everything in their power to push them across the border to become our burden?

Never look at another flag. Remember, that behind Government, there is your country, and that you belong to her as you do belong to your own mother. Stand by her as you would stand by your own mother

    Hi WMM,

Geesh, you mean that Messyco (like that!) should be helping their own citizens get education, health care, jobs, etc, in their OWN country?

Instead of taking AMERICAN jobs and sending the $22 Billion + back to Mexico, so that it bleeds the US economy?

    Amazing concept!

Thing is, they can't use these ITIN numbers to gain employment. So, they get this number & use a stolen or fake SS# to get a job. Employers take out taxes (if any when claiming 10 dependents ) under fake SS#s.

Tax time, they use ITIN #s on tax returns & include the W2 with the fake SS#. Some states are withholding refunds.
