S.D.U.T.: Immigration blame extends beyond the cities

    UNION-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL

    Taking responsibility

Immigration blame extends beyond the cities

    October 11, 2008

There are myriad reasons why the United States suffers with illegal immigration – from Americans' insatiable appetite for cheap labor, to income disparities between neighboring countries, to the failure of countries all over the world to produce jobs so people don't have to flee, to the reluctance of elected officials in this country to crack down on the powerful business interests that keep illegal immigrants gainfully employed.

The problem is complex, and there are no simple and pain-free solutions. But it would be a step in the right direction if all interested parties would stop pointing fingers and take their share of responsibility.

That includes local cities and towns, which have the responsibility to uphold the law by cooperating with federal authorities and not offer “sanctuaryâ€

    What the heck?

This is exactly the opposite of what the SDUT has been preaching for the past ten years. They have basically always said: "We need their (illegals) labor and they should be legalized". I wonder if the "bomb" that has gone off on Wall Street changed their position?

But on the topic of personal responsibility, the federal government is not immune. Julie Myers, the assistant director of Homeland Security for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, recently blamed sanctuary policies for making it harder for federal agents to arrest and deport criminal gang members living in the United States illegally.

Not so fast. ICE is not exactly powerless to arrest and deport illegal immigrants, including criminal gang members, if only it would enact policies and procedures to do so. It needs to take up the often politically unpopular practice of going after employers aggressively, and continue raiding businesses that hire illegal immigrants. For many years, such raids were a rare occurrence. Now they do occur, but they too often target employees and not employers.
Myers does have a point: True, federal law enforcement officials could ignore sanctuary policies and do their job. But since a large number of the elected oficials in sanctuary cities are lawyers--or have already established human rights commissions populated with lawyers, or have active ACLU chapters---whatever ICE does will be intensely scrutinized and challenged with legal actions. These elected offciclas will have a well organized political machine to harass and covertly thwart the duties of ICE.

Excellent article! But I agree that we must start slapping down these
businesses that hire illegals. The fines and penalties must be so steep
as to make them not want to attempt it.

Their ad revenue is down because of the bad economy, just like all other media.
Also, many people now get all of their news from the internet instead of news papers or even radio or TV news.
