Mexican Farmers for New NAFTA Talks

Mexico, Mar 19 (Prensa Latina) Mexican farmers called on Sunday to stage three big protests to demand that the federal government renegotiate the agricultural chapter of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

It goes beyond anger and spontaneity, said farmer leaders, who explained that they would submit to the government real and viable proposals for the agricultural and labor sectors.

The agrarian front, made up of several groups of farmers and trade unions, as well as parliamentary groups, will meet on Tuesday to design a national action plan to boost the measures that the government has so far refused to implement.

In order to pressure the government, strikes will be staged at land, air and maritime border checkpoints to prevent the entrance of products that affect Mexico s economy.

The NAFTA is an economic agreement that came into force in January 1994 to create a free trade zone among Mexico, Canada and the United States.
