Mexican fugitive caught trying to sneak across border
    Associated Press

RIO GRANDE CITY -- Border Patrol agents caught a Mexican man wanted in a 2002 homicide shortly after he attempted to sneak back into the United States, Customs and Border Protection said today.

Valentin Mata Nunez, 28, was identified by fingerprints as a fugitive in an Edinburg homicide, CBP spokesman Roy Cervantes said.

Cervantes said Mata and another man activated a Border Patrol sensor as they walked from the banks of the Rio Grande at about noon Sunday. The fingerprint scan turned up warrants for Nunez in the homicide case as well as for an automobile theft in McAllen.

The other man did not have warrants out for him, Cervantes said.

Mata was taken into the custody of the Edinburg police department.

Illegal immigrant accused of beating a man to death

EDINBURG - Border Patrol agents caught an illegal immigrant wanted for murder. Valentin Mata Nunez was on the run for nearly four years.

Edinburg police say Nunez is responsible for the death of 49-year-old Jose Perez.

The suspect is accused of cracking Perez's skull and beating him to death at an Edinburg bar in November 2002.

Officers tell us Nunez hid in Mexico for four years. His life on the run ended when Border Patrol agents arrested him over the weekend.

Agents say fingerprints confirmed Nunez was wanted by Edinburg police.

Officers charged Nunez with murder. His bond was set at $750,000.

Why would there be any bond set for a suspected murderer that is a huge threat to flee prosecution if given the opportunity? There should be no bond for murderers that are a threat to flee.

Of course I'm sure $750,000 may as well be 1 billion to this illegal, but that's not the point!
