Officials have confirmed Daniel Perez, wanted in connection with the murder of his father-in-law in Fontana, will be turned over to them today by Mexican officials.
Perez has been a fugitive in Mexico since the shooting death of his father-in-law Carlos Vara of Fontana early on Aug. 28, 1999. Vara was killed in his home shortly after he testified against Perez, who was being tried for the attempted murder of his wife, Anabella.
Police said Perez has been sought since he failed to appear for his trial later in the day after the shooting of Vara. He was convinced in absentia to 33 years in prison on the attempted murder charge.
He was arrested by Mexican authorities early last year in Mazatlan where he was reportedly living with a new wife and child.
Previously, Mexican authorities had refused to extradite murder suspects who face life in prison without the possibility of parole in the United States.
However, the Mexican Supreme Court in November 2005 overturned the extradition ban.
U.S. officials plan an 11 a.m. press conference in Los Angeles on Friday about the case.
