Mexican government condemns vigilantes

Mexico City, Mexico, Mar. 29 (UPI) -- The Mexican Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it condemns people taking unilateral action to prevent illegal migrants from entering the United States at the U.S.-Mexican border.

The ministry in a statement renounced a civil group organized to assist the U.S. Border Patrol apprehend Mexican migrants attempting to illegally cross the border -- specifically a group called the Minuteman Project in the state of Arizona.

The Minuteman Project, which has more than 1,000 volunteers, says it plans to begin its monitoring of the border April 1 and will remain along the border across the Sonora Desert for the entire month.

Mexican officials have urged U.S. authorities to assure the rights of Mexican nationals be respected if they are found in the area.

"The Mexican government has called the actions to detain Mexican migrants on the part of these groups unacceptable," the statement read. "Additionally, the government has reiterated in diverse forums its commitment to continue working with the U.S. government to find mechanisms to assure that the migration of Mexicans to the United States is legal, safe, orderly and respectful of their rights."

The ministry has instructed Mexican consulates along the border with Arizona to be ready to deal with cases of Mexican citizens who come into contact with the vigilante groups.
