Mexican Marines Kill Gunmen in Valle Hermoso

VALLE HERMOSO, MEXICO - The Mexican navy says Marines killed eight gunmen in a shootout near Valle Hermoso Tuesday night.

Authorities say they received tips that a convoy of armed men were in the area. When the Marines arrived the gunmen opened fire.

The Marines fired back and the suspects fled to a brushy area. A search by Marines turned up eight bodies. It is not known if the gunmen were connected to the Gulf or Zeta cartels which operate near the border. One marine was wounded.

Mexican authorities have released additional details from a firefight early Tuesday in Valle Hermoso that left eight gunmen dead and one Mexican marine injured but out of danger.

The fighting began after authorities received an anonymous tip of a convoy of SUVs carrying gunmen around Valle Hermoso, according to a news release from the Mexican navy. Naval officials sent a convoy of Mexican marines to investigate.

The marines said they came under fire when they arrived at the city. They fought back, setting up a full frontal attack that included air support from a helicopter, according to the release. The gunmen then fled into a brushy area.

During a follow-up search of the area, authorities found the bodies of eight gunmen as well as five SUVs. Inside the vehicles, authorities reported finding several counterfeit “MARINAâ€
