Mexican Nationals Being Issued New ID Cards

MCALLEN - Mexican nationals living in the U.S. are being issued new identification cards.

It is all in an effort by the Mexican government and foreign ministry to keep up with technology and improve security measures.

The new IDs were issued at the start of this month. The new card has 55 security features.

Mexican Consulate Spokesperson Jose Alberto Navarro said, "The purpose of it is to improve the security of the document. We have laser printing, a chip with our information and the photograph also has security measures. This is in order to give more security to the document. We know it's really important for our nationals to have an ID document."

Navarro said Mexican nationals can make an appointment to purchase the ID for a small fee.
