Mexican Police Arrest Major Cartel Leader

Last Update: 7:20 pm

REYNOSA, MEXICO - Mexican federal police arrested another major cartel leader Wednesday. Federal forces arrested him in Reynosa.

His nickname is "El Negro." He's a huge get for the Mexican federal forces. He goes by Martin Armando Briones Muniz or Eduardo Flores Borrego. He was the Gulf Cartel leader in charge of a small army of 32 killers whose job was to eliminate Zetas in Mier, Reynosa and across Tamaulipas.

Mexican federal police say they arrested El Negro and two of his associates in Colonia Las Fuentes.

A former DEA intelligence supervisor in the Houston field office told us earlier this week the Mexican military is targeting key cartel leaders to takedown.

In the last month, the military killed the head of the La Familia Michoacan Cartel, arrested a key Zeta recruiter in Monterrey, a Zeta boss in Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon and Guatemala. Last month, the military arrested key Zeta bosses in Puebla, Tabasco and Cancun.

The former DEA intelligence officer told us he expects the military to be even more aggressive in killing or arresting cartel bosses in the new year.
