Dispute Over Immigrant College Tuition Fees

TRENTON, N.J. State lawmakers remain at odds over a bill that would provide in-state tuition status for undocumented immigrant children living in New Jersey.

The measure has languished in the Legislature, so about 50 students and supporters of the bill attended a Senate Education Committee meeting yesterday and later approached chairwoman Shirley Turner about it.

The bill would grant in-state tuition status to students who have graduated high school in New Jersey and lived here for at least three years.

Turner, a Democrat from Mercer County, says she supports education opportunities for every child but worries that the bill could land New Jersey in legal hot water.

But Senator Ronald Rice, the bill's sponsor, disagrees.

He says children who didn't have a say in whether they would illegally immigrate to the U-S should have the same opportunity as their classmates.
