Details of attacks released in rapist case
Chandler assailant studied victims before he struck, police say

He told one 12-year-old girl he loved her. He brought a 14-year-old girl a glass for water at her request.

But those moments were interspersed with ones of sheer terror in which he placed a knife or screwdriver to the girls' necks, threatened to slit their throats, then proceeded to sexually assault them.

Victim accounts in the "Chandler Rapist" case, released Thursday, corroborate police theory that the assailant studied the girls and their families before striking, either through break-ins or the ruse of offering help.

Police have arrested Santana Batiz Aceves in the case. He has been charged with 47 counts of kidnapping, sexual molestation, sexual abuse of a minor, burglary and aggravated assault.

The serial rapist began his ambushes on June 4, 2006, and continued to overpower young girls for some 18 months in six attacks, police say.

In each case, the attacker left a trail of physical evidence, court records show:

    June 4, 2006
A 12-year-old girl was asleep in her apartment when she heard a knock at 5:30 a.m. and thought it was her dad, who had left earlier for work. She answered the door to find a man who told her there was a fire and that he would help her collect her things.

He grabbed her, covered her mouth and told her not to scream or he would drive a screwdriver through her throat. He made her lay on a towel on the living room floor, told her he loved her and he had been "watching her for a long time."

    Jan. 16, 2007
Two 13-year-old girls were inside an apartment at 8:40 a.m. when a man walked in and said he worked for the city of Chandler and he needed to repair their air-conditioner. He then held them at gunpoint and told them not to scream. He pulled a hood over his head and drew the strings. One girl told him to shoot her.

"I'm not going to shoot you, I'm going to cut you," he told her.

He was also armed with a 6-inch knife with a black handle.

The two fought back and bent the knife back away from one girl's neck. The other hit the suspect in the head with a lamp and kicked him in the groin and face before forcing him out of the bedroom. He left and police recovered DNA and a piece of plastic from a Daisy air pistol.

A 14-year-old girl opened her door to leave for school at 7:10 a.m. when a man forced her back in and pulled a black ski mask over his face. He made the girl lie down on the floor and said he would slit her throat if she got up. After the attack he heard his cellphone go off, with a ringtone of bells and rings.

He made the girl shower, but she attempted to save as much physical evidence as possible. He threatened to kill her family if she told anyone and then left, taking the girl's underwear, house key and Denver Nuggets T-shirt. Police recovered DNA.

A 13-year-old girl was sleeping at 6:30 a.m. when she woke to a man wearing a black ski mask. He threatened her with a knife. The girl asked him to stop, that she needed to go to the restroom and he waited for her. He made her lie down again and then she asked for a glass of water. He left for the bathroom and returned with a glass. After 20 minutes, he asked the girl to take a bath, then took the knife and towel and left.

The girl said the same man had entered the house months ago to offer help, claiming the neighbor's house was on fire. But when she looked out the window and didn't see smoke, he left.

    June 8
A 14-year-old girl was in her room at 8:50 p.m. when a man entered with a knife and told her to be quiet. During the attack, the girl's grandfather opened the bedroom door to tell her it was time for bed. The suspect ran, shoving the grandfather on his way out. Police recovered DNA.

    Nov. 8
A 15-year-old girl was home alone and a man entered, kissed her and attempted to sexually assault her. He then ran from the home

On Jan. 11, after a tip about a suspicious car in the neighborhood, police identified Batiz Aceves as the suspect in the Chandler Rapist case.

After the arrest, two victims identified him as their assailant. A search of his home and vehicle yielded, among other items, a black ski mask, a cellphone, knives, a Daisy air gun with a side grip missing and the school report card of one of the girls who was attacked, authorities said.
