Mexican national sentenced to 16 months for illegally possessing a firearm


MADISON, Wis. – An illegal alien from Mexico was sentenced to 16 months in prison Tuesday for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. The sentence resulted from an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Watertown Police Department.

Edgar Santos Ortiz, 38, of Watertown, Wis., was sentenced Dec. 19 in the Western District of Wisconsin.
In sentencing Santos Ortiz, U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb noted her concern over a large number of false identification documents that were recovered with a firearm, suggesting additional criminal activity.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Meredith P. Duchemin, Western District of Wisconsin, successfully prosecuted the case.
