DONNA - Several Mexican soldiers are being questioned on the American side of the international bridge in Donna.

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials confirm there was a Mexican military incursion at the Donna International Bridge on Tuesday.

ICE spokeswoman Nina Pruneda said ICE Homeland Security investigators are questioning several people who crossed into the United States. We're told fewer than 40 people came over in Mexican military vehicles.

ICE agents are working with Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection officers. Investigators are trying to figure out why the people came across. We're told ICE, Customs and Border Patrol are all on scene.

South Texan chased across border by Mexican soldiers

    The Monitor

DONNA — After being processed by U.S. authorities, 33 Mexican soldiers who crossed the international boundary in four military Humvees on Tuesday afternoon were allowed to return to Mexico.

U.S. officials who interviewed the soldiers about the incursion on the Donna-Rio Bravo bridge could not divulge a reason for it — other than to say that the soldiers had lost sight of the line and crossed inadvertently.

But a source outside of law enforcement and with knowledge of border activity said the soldiers were chasing a South Texas resident who had crossed into Mexico, and although the soldiers did not capture the individual, U.S. authorities did.

That story could not be corroborated with U.S. authorities.

I watched that video. The obvious conclusion is the soldiers could not have mistaken where the border line was.

Mexican military vehicles crossed into U.S., officials say

Mexican military vehicles crossed into U.S., officials say

    By Mariano Castillo, CNN
    July 27, 2011 -- Updated 1600 GMT (0000 HKT)

(CNN) -- Four humvees carrying 33 Mexican soldiers crossed the border into the United States, and officials on both sides say it was a harmless mistake.

The convoy of military vehicles crossed the recently-opened Donna--Rio Bravo International Bridge, which links the two cities of the same names in Texas and Mexico.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. ET) Tuesday, Customs and Border Protection spokesman Rick Pauza told CNN.

The soldiers "just said they inadvertently crossed onto the U.S. side," he said.

The military men were processed at the port of entry before being allowed to cross back, he said.

For its part, the Mexican military said that while patrolling the border, they accidentally got on the international bridge and had no choice but to enter the American side because that is where the turn-around is located.

"Everything was fine, there was no resistance and no other issues there," Pauza said.

Anytime the Mexican military crosses the international border, it draws attention, however, as previous incursions have been recorded.

In 2008, seven members of the Mexican military were found inside the United States, telling border agents that they became lost and accidentally entered the country.

In 2006, a group of soldiers -- or men dressed as soldiers, as Mexican officials said -- were recorded accompanying suspected drug smugglers who became stuck in the Rio Grande.
