(live-PR.com) - PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Mexico (AP) - A truck carrying mining explosives blew up after colliding with another vehicle in northern Mexico, killing at least 37 people, including three reporters who had come to the scene, state and federal officials said.

The explosion occurred near the town of Sacramento.

This should be front-page news, considering the Mexican trucks now coming to neighborhoods near us. But I bet the MSM will be hiding this one.

OK, here's my list of obvious questions:

    1. When was the last time a similar incident happened here in the US?
...and, more importantly - WHY the difference?

    2. I suppose we should *assume* the destination of the truck was somewhere internal to Mexico - but, is it possible that it was ultimately headed here?

    3. Is the owner/manager of this truck on the list to be given permission (included in the DOT pilot program) to drive here? (God forbid).

In short: the fact that such thing occurred demonstrates a huge difference in standards of handling haz-mat items. A similar event has not happened here in a long, long time - I'll assume - to our much higher trucking/handling standards and tighter controls. Is this what we can expect from future trucks from Mexico???

This story is also being reported as a separate item. I haven't yet seen any connection to the truck explosion.

Blasts Hit Mexico Oil Company Pipelines

    The Associated Press
    Monday, September 10, 2007; 10:00 AM

MEXICO CITY -- Several explosions believed to the work of result of sabotage ripped apart pipelines for Mexico's state oil monopoly early Monday, the company said. There were no injuries.

The Mexican state oil monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, issued a statement saying it believed the explosions, which forced the evacuation of 12,000 people, were deliberate.

A small, left-wing guerrilla group claimed to have attacked a major Pemex gas pipeline in July and at least a dozen major companies, including Honda Motor Co., Kellogg Co. and The Hershey Co., were forced to suspend or scale back operations.

The July explosions affected different sections of a major pipeline extending from central Mexico City to
Guadalajara, the industry-rich capital of the western state of Jalisco.

Those attacks sent the Mexican government scrambling to increase security at "strategic installations" across Mexico. It was not clear what security measures were in place at the pipelines that exploded Monday.

Pemex said Monday's explosions affected at least five pipelines in Veracruz, but reported no deaths or injuries.

This is the second time this year something like this has happen and shut or slowed down Americans companys ability to carry on production in Mexico.

Couldn't think of anyone who deserves it more!! Guess this is what happens when you have your production in a third world nation, would be nice if it cost them more for attacts like this than the cost of production in the U.S. with American workers.

Dozens dead in Mexico truck crash and blast
    Reuters

    Monday, September 10, 2007; 10:51 AM

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) - Dozens of people died when a trailer-truck loaded with highly flammable chemicals exploded in a road accident in northern Mexico, Mexican media reported on Monday.

The blast left a crater of up to 65 feet in diameter in the road in the northern state of Coahuila, the El Universal daily said on its Web site.

The paper, quoting police, said 37 people were killed when the blast erupted after the trailer-truck hit another truck. But the civil protection agency put the death toll at 25.

"Part of the trailer caught fire after the crash and that's where the explosion came from," said state Gov. Humberto Moreira.

Some 150 people were injured. Most of the people who died, including three newspaper journalists, had rushed to the scene of the crash.

"Reporters who were taking photographs died there as well as emergency workers and drivers who stopped to help," Moreira said.

The trailer-truck was carrying 25 metric tons of a derivative of the volatile ammonium nitrate chemical used for fertilizers, civil protection authorities said. The media had earlier said it had been carrying explosives.
