RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Mexican citizens in the Southeast are trekking to Raleigh to register to vote for their country's presidential election next summer.

Mexican consulates in Raleigh and other U-S cities this month began distributing forms voters will need to request absentee ballots.

It's the first time that Mexicans in the United States will be allowed to cast absentee ballots in the presidential election coming in July.

Ricardo Lzaro is a dietitian who lives in Carrboro. He picked up ten copies of the registration form at the Raleigh consulate for himself, family and friends. He's lived in the United States for 20 years, and had to travel back to Mexico to vote in the last presidential election in 2000.

North Carolina's Mexican-born population is estimated to be around 225-thousand.
