Mexicans swamp Canadian refugee system
Mexicans swamp Canadian refugee system
OTTAWA, Oct. 20 (UPI) --
Canada's refugee board is inundated with a record number of Mexican claimants seeking safety from drug wars and corrupt police, officials in Ottawa said.
The Globe and Mail newspaper reported there are 9,070 Mexican refugee claimants waiting to have their cases heard. Immigration and Refugee Board officials say that's the largest number from one country since the board was formed in 1989.
Since 2004, Mexico has been Canada's top source country for refugee claims, the Globe said. However, while Mexicans make up one-third of all refugee claimants, their acceptance rate is 11 percent, compared with an overall acceptance rate of 34 percent for other ethnicities.
Toronto immigration lawyer Doug Lehrer told the newspaper many Mexican refugee claimants are at wits' end because of the violence and corruption in their country.
Mexican authorities are completely overwhelmed and can't offer ordinary people a reasonable level of protection, he said.
The report said that in the last year an estimated 3,000 Mexicans have been killed by drug cartels battling for turf or seeking revenge for police actions. Increasingly, civilians have been targeted in bombing attacks, the newspaper said.

You just can't dump that many people in any country and expect them to deal with it. Mexico needs to get it's act together because there's no place else to run to.

So hard to believe that after fighting these drug cartels for decades they can not seem to get it together, ummm kinda makes you wonder if they even want to...wonder how much cash they are confiscating from the cartel.

Perhaps I am getting more paranoid, but it seems that there need to be more fertile fields to plow so the Mexsickan government does not lose their expected remittances. With the US economy in a downturn, and fighting illegal immigration on the upturn by our citizens, Canada is a virtually untapped market. But may I also suggest that so is Cuba, Russia and China?

Even Canada wont put up with illegal Mexicans much longer. They will learn very quickly what leeches they are and will get rid of them. I just hope Canada doesnt send them here.

The corrupt police and drug wars are nothing more than a BS excuse.
Does anyone remember how Mexicans began fleeing to Canada as "refugees" from the United States approximately a year ago when they didn't get their amnesty and enforcement picked up? They were claiming persecution, intimidation, and being in fear of their lives at the hands of American law enforcement and government. They were also being turned down in droves.
How convenient is it that they now have the drug wars and sudden exposure of the corrupt police force in Mexico to use as their excuseJoin our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
