Mexico: 13,500 police didn't finish grade school

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican government reports that almost 14% of the country's city, state and federal police officers never received a high school diploma, while 4% never made it through grade school.

Assistant Education Secretary Miguel Szekely released the figures Wednesday while announcing a plan to help the officers earn degrees for knowledge they have gained on the job or in home study.

The government recently reported that almost half of the country's 375,000 police officers failed a battery of security, psychological and background tests.

Mexican police forces have been hit by the worst corruption scandal in a decade in recent months, after high-ranking police and prosecution officials were detained for allegedly aiding traffickers.

mexico is a 3rd world nation... where is the surprise?

Most of the illegal aliens who come here from Mexico have a 6th. grade education, or less.

Many are illiterate in Spanish and English.

IMO the Mexican government should be embarrassed.

....public education is only compulsory in Mexico until 6th grade and most of the people especially in the rural areas rarely finish that....

this is why we have such a problem with our educational system...we have millions of uneducated Mexican nationals and their children, most of whom have been poorly educated if at all entering our school system....and we are forced because of Plyer vs. Doe and MALDEF to spend billions in providing K-12 education for all illegal aliens present in the U.S.

If it was not for the United states holding up their economy they would be a third world economy. All that oil money and the money they steal from us makes them a trilllion dollar economy around 11-12th biggest. Mexico needs to better them selfs, because they could also be a powerful country if they grown up and did what they need to do instead of sitting on their backsides.

I am beginning to think the lack of education is somehow our fault. Perhaps, not enough remittances sent home to educate these folks. Or perhaps the education money went to coyotes or drug cartels. Or, or, or...

Mexico IS a third world country.

Most of their people have a 6th grade education, or less, and many are illiterate, and live in poverty.
