Mexico Cites Reprisals in Killings of 9 Officers
By JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr.
MEXICO CITY — In what appears to be a bloody counteroffensive by drug cartels responding to a government crackdown, nine federal police officers, including the chief of the organized crime division, have been killed in the past three weeks.
The brazen killings demonstrated not only the inability of the federal police to protect their own from hit-and-run attacks, but also that the antidrug offensive that President Felipe Calderón began last year still faced powerful resistance.

Doesn't this remind us of the movie "Clear and Present Danger." Only it really is.

05-04-2008, 10:00 PM #4More than 30 of them were federal police officers, who are generally better trained and less corrupt than the local police, and who were usually killed in ambushes.
The commander of the organized crime division, Inspector Roberto Velasco Bravo, was shot in the head on Thursday afternoon by two men who made off with his luxury car. The police say the motive for the killing remains unclear. The crime might have been a carjacking gone awry, but the killers might also have been taking aim at his work.
On Friday, less than 24 hours later, a second high-ranking federal police official, Inspector José Aristeo Gómez MartÃ*nez, was gunned down as he left his house in the wealthy Coyoacán neighborhood. He had been an administrator in the headquarters of the federal police, and the police say he is also believed to have died resisting a robbery, though the motive remains murky.
Corruption and lawlessness thrive in Mexico.
We will be hearing more of this.....Calderon desperately wants the $1.4 billion Merida Initiative to obtain our technology for his army and Bush wants him to get the drug fighting package.
"The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power."
