Officials from National Migrant Institute, a Mexican government agency, deported 46,716 Central American migrants between January and November 2011, the agency reported in a news release Tuesday.
That number comprises 74 percent of migrants held at detention centers for migrants, the release added.
In all, Mexican authorities deported 23,560 Guatemalans, 15,650 Hondurans, 6,935 Salvadorians, and 571 Nicaraguans, officials said. Of those, 41,215 were men, and 5,501 were women.
In addition, 16,508 migrants were allowed to remain in México under a humanitarian visa, as refugee status, or some were given the chance to return to their home countries without being subject to deportation, the release said.
In comparison, 49,362 migrants were returned to their home countries between January and November 2010, Mexican authorities said.
"Those held at migrants' detention centers were processed in accordance with their human rights," officials said in a statement.
But officials at Amnesty International, a grassroots activist organization, said last December that México still fails to protect migrants from what they called widespread human rights abuses.
In the past year alone, Amnesty International said in a release, "the organization had documented numerous cases where Central American migrants traveling through México had been kidnapped, tortured, raped, killed and disappeared by criminal gangs."
According to Amnesty International, those cases occurred with "the complicity of public officials."
