Mexico detains two Border Patrol agents in weapons case

MONTERREY, Mexico Mexico is holding two U-S Border Patrol agents after illegal ammunition was found in their car.

Authorities today announced the officers were off-duty when they were arrested late Friday in Mexicali, across from Calexico, California.

Both are at a Mexicali prison on weapon possession charges.

Agents German Verdugo and David Allen Navarro were driving a private vehicle when they were detained.

Verdugo and Allen Navarro crossed into Mexico in a lane assigned to vehicles with nothing to declare -- but were selected for inspection.

Customs inspector found a box containing nearly 13-hundred .40-caliber and .223-caliber bullets.

Mexican law restricts that ammo to use by only the Mexican military.
