    Aurora ICE facility to expand

    Sentinel reports

Aurora | A privately run immigration detention center in north Aurora will undergo a $72 million expansion in the next two years, expanding from 400 beds to 1,500, the company that owns the facility said.

Officials from Boca Raton, Fla.-based Geo Group, which owns the Aurora facility and 67 other private corrections facility worldwide, said in a news release that the expansion will start late this year and will be complete in 2009.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency use the facility, located at East 30th Ave and Peoria Street, to house suspects.

"The expansion of the Aurora ICE Processing Center will play an important role in addressing the need by federal agencies for detention space around the country," GEO CEO George Zoley said in a prepared statement.

If the expanded facility operates at 90 percent capacity, GEO officials predict it will generate an additional $30 million in revenue annually.

If they put Sheriff Joe in charge of this, I bet the cost would be closer to $72,000 than $72 million. What are they building? The ICE Hilton?
