CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (AP) — Police in northern Mexico have seized nearly $2.9 million in cash that was apparently in transit to a criminal gang.

A statement from the security coordination agency in the Gulf coast state of Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, says 86 bundles of U.S. dollars and two more containing Mexican pesos were found inside hidden compartments in two trucks.

Thursday's operation took place in the municipality of Villagran, near the Nuevo Leon state border and about 90 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of the city of Monterrey.

Three suspects were arrested. Authorities said Friday that the suspects acknowledged intending to deliver the money to an organized crime group.

In all, the cash totaled $2,856,350.
