Patrol reinstates permanent south Arizona checkpoints

TUCSON, Ariz. The Border Patrol has stopped moving its checkpoints in southern Arizona now that Representative Jim Kolbe has retired.

The Tucson Republican had for years championed moving checkpoints as a more effective way to catch illegal immigrants.

Kolbe inserted language in appropriations bills prohibiting permanent installations in Southern Arizona.

With Kolbe's retirement, the Border Patrol Tucson sector chief issued a directive to stop moving the checkpoints every seven to 14 days as required by the earlier funding laws.

The language that mandated the roving checkpoints was omitted from the fiscal 2007 Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill.

The Tucson sector is now operating six full-time checkpoints in southern Arizona
