Mexico probes agent pursuit of migrant into river

MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities have launched investigations into the behavior of an immigration agent who pursued a migrant into the river that marks the border between Mexico and Guatemala, and then stood by the bank as the woman drifted away, officials said Friday.

A video shot by bystanders shows the agent standing on the bank of the Usumacinta river as the female migrant barely stays afloat. She apparently jumped into the river to avoid capture, and was eventually rescued by a boater.

The agent is seen in the video, which was posted on the internet, with a machete that he lay on a stone wall, but it is unclear whether he threatened the woman with it. Mexican immigration agents normally do not carry weapons.

Mexico's National Migration Institute announced that it was investigating the incident. And the government's National Human Rights Commission said Friday it is also investigating whether her rights were violated.

In response to complaints that police and gangs abuse the tens of thousands of migrants who cross the country to reach the United States, Mexico changed its laws and no longer consider illegal immigration a crime.

The issue of migrant abuse - which Mexico complains bitterly about when it occurs in the United States - came to the fore following the massacre of 72 illegal Central and South American migrants last August at a ranch in the northern border state of Tamaulipas. A drug gang is suspected in those killings.

I hope Guatemala jumps in on this! Can you imagine the screaming we would be hearing if this were to happen here, a BP agent watch a Mexican National wash down the Rio Grande? AND be caught on tape?

we would never hear the end of it. they would be wanting charges brought against our agent for causing her to not get caught and possibly drowning.

HEY...does that mean WE can go to Mexico illegally in droves now and give 'em a taste of their own medicine? How about sending some of our Native American patriots over there and have them cry "indigneous"?

They can still deport you, they just don't put you in prison for it.
(On the first offense anyway.)

I say let's all go over there, march in their streets waving U.S. flags singing the national anthem, and demand they open their borders to the U.S. because their closed borders are "cruel" to us Americans....

Their border is open to Americans, as long as you have U.S. $$$ in your pocket.
You will need a U.S. passport to get back into the U.S.
unless you are willing to re-enter illegally.

I'm here to tell you, as certain as the sun will rise tomorrow, that mexico would NEVER allow that to happen! I don't care what they tell you insofar as considering illegal immigration a non-crime.

They would never allow their country to be conquered by a hostile invader as the United States has done. Mexico does not exist under the illusion of multiculturism and diversity. Mexico is for mexicans and they will keep it that way. Guaranteed!
