McALLEN — Mexican officials are reaching out to their fellow Mexicans who live in the U.S. in an effort to get them registered to vote in the upcoming 2012 presidential election.

A change in the electoral code in 2005 first allowed Mexican expatriates to cast their ballots in the 2006 presidential election in which current President Felipe Calderón won the office.

Mexico’s Electoral Institute, known by its Spanish abbreviation IFE, reports that 56,312 expatriates tried to register for that election. Of those, 40,876 were eligible, but only 32,632 actually cast their ballots.

According to the Mexican Consulate in McAllen, the country’s embassies and consulates worldwide are making a push this year to distribute the necessary paperwork to give as many eligible Mexicans as possible the chance to vote.

The initiative was prompted by the large number of Mexicans living outside the country.

The Electoral Institute reports that more than 11.6 million Mexicans live abroad, with 95 percent of those residing in the U.S., particularly in Arizona, California and Texas.

Those who meet the requirements have until Jan. 15 to register to join the official list of foreign voters. Mail-in ballots for the next election will later be sent to their residences. The ballots are scheduled to arrive at homes between April 16 and May 20. Once filled out, they must be mailed before July 1.

Any Mexican citizen age 18 or older who has a valid voter registration card is eligible to vote. However, the voter registration card can only be obtained inside Mexico, according to consular officials.
